Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) He was born in Boston and was the tenth son of soap maker, Josiah Franklin. His mother was Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah. Young Benjamin loved to read and was an apprentice to his brother James, who was a printer. He helped to compose, set the type and then to distribute the pamphlets they printed.
In 1729, Benjamin Franklin bought a newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette and he often contributed articles to his own paper under aliases. His paper soon became very successful in the colonies and was one of the first papers to include political cartoons which were written by him.
In 1733 he began publishing Poor Richard's Almanac. It included such things as weather reports, recipes, predictions and homilies. Many of the famous phrases associated with Franklin, such as, "A penny saved is a penny earned" come from Poor Richard’s Almanac.
In the 1720’s and 1730’s Franklin organized the “Junto” a group dedicated to self improvement and civic improvement. He also joined the Masons about this same period. By 1749 he had retired from business and started concentrating on science, experiments, and inventions. He invented the efficient “Franklin” heating stove, swim fins, the glass armonica (a musical instrument) and bifocals.
He began to study electricity in the early 1750's. His observations, involving the nature of electricity and
lightning brought Franklin international fame. He went to England and stayed until 1775, as a Colonial representative not only of Pennsylvania, but of Georgia, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
In 1765, he began to wonder if the American colonies should break free of England. Franklin was elected
to the Second Continental Congress and worked on helping to draft the Declaration of Independence.
Though much of the writing is Thomas Jefferson's, much of the contribution is Franklin's. In 1776 Franklin
signed the Declaration of Independence, and afterward sailed to France as an ambassador to the Court of
Louis XVI. The government of France not only signed a Treaty of Alliance with the Americans in 1778 but
also secured loans for the Colonies. In his late seventies, Franklin became president of the Executive Council
of Pennsylvania and served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention whereby he signed the
Constitution. One of his last public acts was writing an anti-slavery treatise in 1789.
Franklin died on April 17, 1790 at the age of 84. It is said that 20,000 people attended the funeral of the
man who was called, "the harmonious human multitude."

William and Mary College and became a Lawyer.

James Madison (1751-1836) He was brought up in Orange County Virginia and attended Princeton; then
called the college of New Jersey. He participated in the framing of the Virginia Constitution in 1776, served
in the Continental congress and was a leader in the Virginia assembly. Madison made a major contribution
to the ratification of the Constitution by writing the Federalist essays with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. Also, he helped frame the Bill of rights. He opposed Hamilton’s financial proposals which he felt would unduly bestow wealth and power upon northern financiers. Out of this came the development of the Republican or Jeffersonian Party. Madison was elected President in 1808.

Thomas Pain (1737-1809) He was born in Thetford, England, and came to the United States at age 37,
just in time to take part in the American Revolution. He had met Benjamin Franklin who had advised him to immigrate to the British Colonies in America and wrote him letters of recommendations. Paine left England in October and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 30, 1774 after barely surviving the transatlantic voyage. He was an English pamphleteer, revolutionary, radical, classical liberal, inventor and intellectual. He
was the author of the very popular pamphlet “Common Sense” which advocated independence for the American Colonies from Great Britain. Also he authored a series of pamphlets called “The American Crisis”
from 1776-1783 that supported the American Revolution. In 1793-94 he wrote “The Age of Reason”
which advocated “Deism” and took issue with Christian doctrines. The word “Deism” is the belief that there
is a God that created the physical universe but does not interfere with it.
Paine was also an inventor and received a patent in Europe for a single span iron bridge, a smokeless candle
and worked with John Fitch on the early development of steam engines.
